The High-Performance Computing (HPC) group is part of the Research and Development Sciences IT department responsible for the development, delivery and support of scientific computing solutions used by Merck’s drug discovery and development scientists.
We are seeking an HPC Engineer that is passionate about the challenges of scientific and research computing.
The primary activities include but are not limited to :
Installation and maintenance of applications within HPC Linux cluster environments.
Closely interact with our Linux Infrastructure / OS systems administration team.
Troubleshooting and debugging application issues.
University degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Mathematics or a scientific, or engineering discipline.
3+ years related work experience in Linux system administration (RedHat or CentOS, Scientific Linux).
Experience with common Linux utilities / services / protocols such as SFTP, cron, TCP / IP, NFS, LDAP, DNS, NAS, Aspera, etc.
A minimum of 1 year experience in compiling, testing, and maintaining software applications in a large, diverse & distributed Linux environment.
Familiarity with basic application building tools and compilers (gcc, gfortran, make, autoconf / configure, Easybuild, spack).
Fluency in at least 1 scripting language like Python, Bash, Ruby, or Perl.
A minimum 1 year of experience using JIRA, Confluence, Agile / Kanban, ALM, Sharepoint and Visio
A minimum of 1 year experience in a regulated environment
Excellent written and verbal communication skills of technical and non-technical information.
Ability to work within a broad cross-functional environment of IT professionals & research scientists.
Ability to analytically troubleshoot application and job failures.
Comply with applicable company policies and procedures.
Learning and mastering new cutting-edge technologies to help our researchers conquer hurdles in their respective research fields.
Ability to work in international and intercultural teams.
Experience with cloud technologies (AWS).
Familiarity with Parallel execution environments such as MPICH2, OpenMPI / MPI and CUDA / GPU.
Experience in configuration, tuning, deployment of application / web / database servers such as Tomcat and Oracle.
Experience with Java code and applications.
Experience supporting X-Windows GUI applications.
Experience with multi-terabyte data sets and data lifecycle management processes.
Experience with automated build and deployment technologies such as Jenkins, Docker, Ansible, Puppet, Chef, Saltstack, Easybuild, Spack or other automation tools.
Ability to combine scientific organizational knowledge with IT competency to provide researchers with state-of-the-art infrastructure (including HPC) in the Cloud or on-premise and to meet their specific scientific needs.
Ability to create and maintain IT systems & user documentation.
Oversee Change Management of all changes to production and ensure a documented audit trail.
Support the organization’s transformation to a product model
Knowledge of the drug discovery process.
