The primary responsibility of the Service Activation Engineer is to transition the control of single, medium complexity IT service from a client environment to successful operation in the Dimension Data environment.

Project management

Defines, documents and carries out small projects or sub-projects (typically less than six months, with limited budget, limited interdependency with other projects, and no significant strategic impact), alone or with a small team, actively participating in all phases.

Identifies, assesses and manages risks to the success of the project. Agrees project approach with stakeholders, and prepares realistic plans (including quality, risk and communications plans) and tracks activities against the project schedule, managing stakeholder involvement as appropriate.

Monitors costs, timescales and resources used, and takes action where these deviate from agreed tolerances. Ensures that own projects are formally closed and, where appropriate, subsequently reviewed, and that lessons learned are recorded.

Service acceptance

Engages with project management to confirm that products developed meet the service acceptance criteria and are to the required standard.

Feeds into change management processes.

Configuration management

Maintains secure configuration, applying and maintaining tools, techniques and processes to identify, track, log and maintain accurate, complete and current information.

Change management

Assesses, analyses, develops, documents and implements changes based on requests for change.

Release and deployment

Assesses and analyses release components. Provides input to scheduling. Carries out the builds and tests in coordination with testers and component specialists maintaining and administering the tools and methods manual or automatic -

and ensuring, where possible, information exchange with configuration management. Ensures release processes and procedures are maintained.

Technical specialism

Maintains knowledge of specific specialisms, provides detailed advice regarding their application and executes specialised tasks.

The specialism can be any area of information or communication technology, technique, method, product or application area.

Relationship management

  • Implements stakeholder engagement / communications plans, including, for example; handling of complaints; problems and issues;
  • managing resolutions; corrective actions and lessons learned; collection and dissemination of relevant information. Uses feedback from customers and stakeholders to help measure effectiveness of stakeholder management.

    Helps develop and enhance customer and stakeholder relationships.

    Pre-Sales Participation

    In terms of managing the activation of the services, the Service Activation Engineer contributes to the Pre-Sales process by partnering with the Service Architect to understand the client’s requirements and to design the required activation plan that will ensure optimal service activation.

    They may be required to undertake due diligence investigations to determine exact client requirements.

    Project Management

    The Service Activation Engineer works according to standard and set project management methodologies to plan for and manage the execution of less complex or smaller service activation projects.

    They engage clients in planning sessions and scoping sessions and use the outcomes to create detailed documentation that will include project definition, project planning, work break down structures, budgets, schedules and project reporting and controls.

    Resource Management

    They identify resource requirements for the activation and negotiate for the use of the resources. During the execution of the activation project, they act as a matrix manager to the resources by providing guidance and resolving issues.

    The Service Activation Engineer will also liaise with the manager of resources allocated to him or her to discuss and address people related issues.

    The Service Activation Engineer will compile baseline budgets for activation projects and manage and report against signed off budgets.

    They will define the process and the requirements definition for toolsets and resources required to deliver the service.

    A vital component of the job is to ensure that the Dimension Data environment is prepared, configured and equipped to operate and support the client service according to agreed Service Level Agreements.

    They ensure the execution of service validation and testing and take responsibility for service release and deployment.

    Transition Management

    The Service Activation Engineer is knowledgeable on the requirements for the following components in the transition process and how these processes are executed through the Dimension Data services :

  • Escalation and Notification
  • Change Management and service activation
  • Release Management and service deployment
  • Preventative and Corrective Maintenance
  • Service Portal
  • Configuration Management
  • Security Management
  • Systems Administration
  • Service validation and testing
  • The Service Activation Engineer is the point of escalation for the activation project and will take responsibility for resolving or owning the resolution of all escalated issues.

    All complex issues will be escalated to the Service Transition Manager. They remain current of developments in the activation management arena and maintain their expertise on activation management approach and methodology.

    They manage risk and minimise potential failure by planning and co-ordinating testing, training and change management activities.

    Certifications required

  • ITIL Certification (Foundation)
  • Work experience required

  • 5-6 years’ work experience
  • At least 4 years’ specific experience within related environment, particularly managed services
  • Experience in applying, managing and executing activation management approaches and applicable methodologies
  • Sound experience in Project Management within an IT industry
  • Demonstrated experience presenting solutions to business
