The IT Release and Deployment Specialist ensures continuous availability of IT services by effectively managing and executing on requests for enhancements to the business IT environments.

What you'll be doing

Manage Release Management Processes

The IT Release and Deployment Specialist acts in a project management capacity to ensure that a release package is built, installed, tested and deployed successfully and in compliance with change control process and procedures.

Their focus is on helping preserve the integrity of the business production systems and hardware when any new configuration items (hardware and software) are deployed.

Own and enable the release management process

The IT Release and Deployment Specialist is the primary person responsible for ensuring that Release Management processes, policies and methods are defined, applied and executed.

They apply principles and disciplines as prescribed by ITIL to the process. This person takes control of the complete release management lifecycle and manages this process to successful execution.

This person collaborates with colleagues in the IT service environment to ensure that all requests for enhancement changes are planned, managed and implemented as release packages.

They ensure that each change request references one or more configuration item from the configuration management database and attach these to the RFC.

They scope and create plans for the deployment of release packages. These plans will consider the development, data migration strategies, pre and post implementation testing strategies, distribution of released software and or hardware and the uninstalling and decommissioning of current software, hardware and infrastructure items.

He or she will plan co-ordinate and prioritise requested release packages based on relatedness and priority and they will ensure that all release packages are scheduled for release according to the relevant change control schedules.

Before the final release, the IT Release and Deployment Specialist will determine the readiness for release based on a number of different criteria.

They do so by acquiring the configuration items and service components and building a test environment, and baseline the contents of the release package.

They ensure that adequate testing is conducted before the changes are released and they compile the plans and procedures for testing.

Should releases fail, the IT Release and Deployment Specialist will assist with and contribute to root cause analysis of these failures.

They ensure the preparation and execution of a training plan to support the release deployment.

They obtain the necessary authorizations and / or approvals in accordance with the Dimension Data control and release management policies.

These would include, but not limited to approval for resources and purchases, alteration of the production environment and authorization for the implementation of change plans from the CAB.

Deploy release

The IT Release and Deployment Specialist works closely with the relevant internal teams to execute the deployment plan in line with Primer.

They ensure the deployment of the release package and decommission, retire or redeploy service assets, monitoring and adjusting the plan as and when required.

These individuals verify the status of the new or modified configuration items and the completion of the required documents and training, soliciting and documenting deviations and corrections to the plan.

These individuals work closely with the technical teams who operate and collect data on the released services to compare progress and performance against early life support elements of the deployment plan.

They ensure that service performance is assessed and improvement changes are planned and implemented accordingly. They close the release and schedule post implementation reviews.

Produce and use reports

The IT Release and Deployment Specialist will conduct post implementation reviews to determine whether key success metrics have been achieved.

They are responsible for providing management reporting on all activities as required by the region.

Provide inputs and guidance to continuously improve internal tools and methods

In terms of internal improvement, they identify changes required to the Release Management process and collaborate with colleagues on other environments improve and implement these changes.

They ensure that all relevant stakeholders are informed of and trained on the correct change control processes.

Manage change control notifications

The IT Release and Deployment Specialist will ensure that the required user communication and notifications are compiled and distributed.

When necessary this specialist will contribute to the planning and co-ordination of user training.

Behavioural Skills

These employees are required to display a high level of attention to detail and good planning and organising ability. They need to communicate effectively and be able to take ownership of problems.

Their ability to work well in a team will contribute to their success. They display a client service orientation, but are able to balance delivery with agreed and contracted expectations.

They display influencing ability in co-ordinating and managing a variety of resources on a release project team.

Required Work Experience :

At least 5 years’ work experience

At least 3 years’ experience in a relevant field
